Winter months can be tough on your wallet, especially when it's time to pay the gas bill. But did you know there are numerous resources available to help? For many households, paying utility bills is a major concern. This article will guide you through available payment resources, specifically for gas bill assistance, helping ease the burden of keeping your home warm.

In this article, we'll explore various options offered by Summit Natural Gas of Maine, including payment arrangements and special considerations for medical emergencies. Additionally, we'll discuss local and state programs, such as HEAP, LIHEAP, and the United Way 211 program, all of which are designed to provide utility bill help. Finally, you'll have a comprehensive understanding of the resources available to help manage your energy expenses.

Understanding Payment Arrangements

One of the primary options Summit Natural Gas provides for customers struggling with their gas bills is the flexible payment arrangement plan. These plans offer flexibility by allowing eligible customers to pay for their outstanding balance over time.

When you enter a payment arrangement, your total balance is divided into manageable monthly installments. This can be a lifeline for families facing temporary financial hardships. It ensures that your gas service remains uninterrupted while you work towards bringing your account up to date.

This process is straightforward. Contact Summit Natural Gas to discuss your situation and options based on your financial circumstances. We will guide you through the necessary steps to set up a payment arrangement.

You can call us at 800-909-7642 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday (except holidays).

Summit Natural Gas LIHEAP Program

To support our customers in need, we’ve developed a Low-income Program to help those currently receiving state or federal low-income home energy assistance (LIHEAP) with additional assistance.

Qualifying customers receiving LIHEAP assistance will be automatically enrolled in the program and will see it reflected as a credit on future bills. Customers who are eligible for LIHEAP but do not receive funds due to LIHEAP funding limitations are also eligible for the program with proof of eligibility. Those customers are encouraged to contact us at 800-909-7642 or email us at customerservice@summitnaturalgas.com. Customers enrolled in the Low-income Program will see a 28% reduction on their Facility and Distribution charges.

The Low-income Program will include a fixed per-person/customer Low-income Program Recovery Charge to collect the total annual discount represented in the program. Right now, that charge is only $2.43 a year, spread out over twelve months. Any amount recovered that exceeds the estimated cost of the program will be put toward the following year’s cost.

Exploring Local and State Energy Aid Programs

Aside from Summit Natural Gas' offerings, there are local and state energy aid programs designed to provide gas bill assistance:

  • Maine State Housing Authority Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP): This federally funded program helps pay heating costs for eligible customers. Income requirements are based on your household size, and if your household income is over the HEAP income guidelines, you may be able to deduct a portion of the amount you paid for medical expenses. Learn more about the program and how to apply on the Maine HEAP site.
  • 211 and United Way: 211 and the United Way offer many services, including resources and referrals for energy assistance. Dial 211 to see if you qualify for help or visit 211 Maine for more information.?You can also text your ZIP code to 898-211.
