Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

LIHEAP, a federal program, helps low-income households pay energy bills, manage energy crises, and arrange for weatherization and energy-related home repairs. It can be a critical resource for staying warm in the winter months. In Maine, applications for the program are processed by local agencies and ProsperityME, and will remain open until May 29, 2026, or until funds are depleted.

Summit’s Low-Income Program

To help ease the burden of energy costs, we offer a Low-Income Program designed to support customers who need financial assistance. Households that receive state or federal LIHEAP assistance are eligible for a 28% discount on service, facility, and distribution charges. Customers who qualify for HEAP through the Maine State Housing Authority will be automatically enrolled once funds are received, with the discount reflected as a credit on future bills.

To fund this assistance, the program includes a small, fixed per-person recovery charge—currently just $2.43 per year, spread across 12 months. Any amount collected beyond what’s needed is applied to reduce program costs in the following year, helping keep the support sustainable and affordable for everyone.

Those who are eligible for HEAP but aren’t receiving funds due to limited resources can still enroll with proof of eligibility by calling 800-909-7642 or emailing customerservice@summitnaturalgas.com.

Tips for Cutting Energy Usage

There are plenty of small things you can do to be proactive and help keep your winter energy consumption down. For home improvements, consider installing a high-efficiency furnace or water heater (view available rebates), caulking gaps around windows, and applying weatherstripping to door frames to keep warm air inside. In your day-to-day life, things like lowering the thermostat when you’re sleeping or away, setting ceiling fans to spin clockwise, or opening your curtains on sunny days can all help reduce your energy costs.
